Research-Teaching Linkages: Overview
Dr. Alan Davidson (University of Dundee) conducted preliminary scoping work in the area of the Research-Teaching linkages. This scoping paper informed the work of the steering committee and the project directors.
The Research-Teaching Linkages steering committee started work in July 2006. Individual members were nominated by their own higher education institution and student associations for membership. Membership of the Committee also includes representation from the Higher Education Academy. In attendance are officers from Universities Scotland, the Scottish Funding Council, student participation in quality Scotland (sparqs) and QAA Scotland.
The focus of the Theme was on taught programmes and looked at how best at institutional and programme level, links between research strategies and activities can support the student learning experience in ways that can enhance learner achievement of research-type attributes.
It is important to note that the Theme was concerned with:
- the progressive development of these types of skills and attributes throughout the continuum of the undergraduate and postgraduate programme i.e. from commencement of the undergraduate learning and
- how best to support the achievement of such attributes through utilising research, creative, scholarly and performance work to inform the:
- curriculum
- teaching, learning and assessment activities and
- the learning environment.
It was important from the outset of the Research-Teaching Linkages Theme to make clear that a wide view and definition of what is meant by the term 'research' was adopted and could include: practice/consultancy led research; research of local economic significance; contributions to the work of associated research institutes or other universities and various types of practice-based and applied research including performances; creative works; and industrial or professional secondments.
