As part of the current Enhancement Theme, QAA Scotland will present a series of webinars aimed at helping you use data to enhance the student experience. Facilitated by a range of sector leaders and experts, these valuable sessions will consider the use of different types of data (both quantitative and qualitative) in a range of contexts.

About this webinar

Amongst a deluge of data this webinar will explore the challenges in finding actionable insights upon which to improve the student experience. From insights gained at module through to course level this webinar will seek to explore the benefits in combining quantitative and qualitative approaches to go beyond the numbers. The webinar will also consider approaches to learning analytics and the potential for using old data in new ways to transform the student experience.


Dr Neil McKay - Dean of Students, Sheffield Hallam University
Dr Neil McKay is the Dean of Students at Sheffield Hallam University. He provides strategic academic leadership in the evaluation and analysis of the student experience to inform and develop practice that shapes the experience of students across the University. He is responsible for the student voice and enhancing student engagement and has an ongoing interest in assessment and feedback practice, the use of technology to enable learning and developing learning analytics that facilitate student success.

Nathaniel Pickering - Senior Lecturer, Research, Evaluation and Student Engagement, Sheffield Hallam University
Nathaniel Pickering is a Senior Lecturer and Fellow of the HEA currently undertaking a PhD in Education and Social Justice at Lancaster University. Nathaniel previously worked in a students' union as a Research and Campaigns Coordinator, so has a good grasp of how to engage students effectively in research projects. Nathaniel takes part in the delivery and embedding of national surveys such as the National Student Survey (NSS), UK Engagement Survey (UKES) and the Postgraduate Taught Education Survey (PTES) and is supporting several ongoing initiatives to evaluate and improve the retention, engagement and success of students.

This webinar will be of interest to a wide range of staff and students, but may be of particular value to those in teaching leadership roles within the Scottish higher education sector.
