RPL workshop series

Date: December 2 - 2022

As part of our Enhancement Themes project, Valuing and Recognising Prior Learning and Experience, we are launching a series of online workshops during session 2022-23. These short, interactive, practically-focused sessions are aimed at practitioners in the tertiary sector who are seeking to learn more about various aspects of RPL.

We are delighted to announce that the first three workshops in the series are now open for registration.

Building Confidence in RPL
Fiona Garry, Development Officer, SCQF Partnership

Tuesday 10 January 2023, 14:00-15:00

This interactive session will give participants an opportunity to learn about SCQF's RPL Toolkit. We will discuss approaches to assessing RPL claims and the institutional structures and practices that support this practice, including how candidates are identified, how claims are assessed, whether RPL appears on student transcripts, how the process is quality assured, and where responsibility lies in the institution. Participants will have a chance to deepen their understanding of RPL claims, and will leave with practical tips and tools to support their own practice.

Meta-skills in Next Generation Higher National Qualifications
Val Innes, Head of Next Generation Qualifications and Standards, SQA
Lee-Anne Murray, Policy and Research Manager, SQA
David McShane, Policy and Research Manager, SQA

Thursday 26 January 2023, 14:00-15:00

All new SQA Next Generation Higher National qualifications include opportunities for students to develop meta-skills. Like graduate attributes, these support the development of other abilities and competencies and encourage an adaptive mindset for success in any context.

The inclusion of meta-skills is designed to complement the industry and sector-specific content of NextGen HN courses and provide a framework for learners to undertake development aligned to professional practices and behaviours as well as personal aims.
This session will provide an overview of the approach being taken to include meta-skills in qualification design and provide an opportunity to discuss how it might support articulation to degree courses.

RPL @ MTU - a twenty-year organisational journey
Professor Irene Sheridan BE, MEngSc, DProf, BCL

Tuesday 28 February 2023, 14:00-15:00

This session will explore the history and development of RPL in Munster Technological University (previously CIT). It will chart the growth from a peripheral pilot activity to an embedded mainstream practice touching on the challenges and opportunities along the way. The changing landscape and the influence of national and international policies on the development of practice will be considered, as well as the challenges presented in more recent times through institutional merger.

It is intended that the session will stimulate a conversation of the practical elements for effective implementation in different contexts and ongoing supports needed to ensure that RPL delivers for students, the university and the community.
