During each Enhancement Theme, Scottish higher education institutions (HEIs) take part in a wide range of activities. Each HEI works on activities that are based on their individual priorities and ambitions within the scope of the Theme. We then publish a range of reports that highlight the variety and richness of this work.

We evaluate the work of the Theme and report on the effectiveness. This is important as it helps us understand how we are making a difference to the student experience and helps identify learning that we can carry forward into future Theme activity.

The following were identified as key areas of priority for the Theme overall:

  • Community-building and fostering a sense of belonging
  • Wellbeing and mental health
  • The use of technology; online and blended learning
  • Accessibility
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion (a mix of targeted work to support particular groups of students, and more general work that reaches beyond protected characteristics)
  • The needs of specific student groups, such as postgraduate (taught and research), part-time and distance-learning students
  • Decolonising the curriculum
  • Broader curriculum development; developing greater flexibility
  • Retention and progression
  • Coaching, mentoring and peer support for students; peer-enabled activity
  • Enhancing skills development for students and staff, including employability and the use of micro-credentials.
